You can finally buy the governments subsidised and branded maize flour at your nearest supermarkets.

The deputy president, William Ruto yesterday in live interview at a local media house had however stated that the much awaited maize would be available over the weekend due to logistical challenges.

It seems now that the government worked over time to ensure the branded maize from Mexico hit the shelves as quickly as possible.

Despite the availability of the cheap maize flour, customers are limited to just two packets each.

This is a government directive which hopes to discourage people especially retailers and wholesalers from buying in Bulk and creating another shortage of maize.

As stated yesterday by the Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture, Willy Bett a 90kgs maize sack costs ksh 2300, a 2kg packet of maize flour retails at ksh 90 and 1 kg will cost ksh 47.

The government Maize subsidy is expected to last until August as clearly stated on the packet expiry date.

"This is just a temporary intervention until the product stabilises and stocks normalise and will last until the next harvest, after the long rains" The agriculture CS added.

The government intends to import five million bags of maize until the end of July and the first consignment of maize from Mexico, approximately 29,900 metric tonnes arrived in the country last week.
