Madaraka Express almost indefinitely suspends its daily services over polls fears
Two Madaraka Express operates daily trips between Mombasa and Nairobi ferrying about 2,400 passengers.
Kenya Railways earlier statement had suspended trips between Nairobi and Mombasa and vice versa until further notice citing the current political climate.
“We have made a decision to suspend Madaraka Express services with immediate effect until further notice due to the current political dynamics in the country...All tickets issued will be refunded or rescheduled to other travel dates when service resumes,” said Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina.
Kenya Railways had initially indicated that it would suspend the train services for a day only to allow its staff to vote and resume normal services on 9th August.
The cancellation would have been a huge disruption to normal businesses and daily normal lives of commuters and goes to show just what a huge economic burden elections have on the Kenyan economy.
This is the first scheduled interruption of the transport service since its launch by President Uhuru Kenyatta in June.
