Commuters forced to dig deeper into their pockets after Kenya Ferry raises toll charges at Likoni channel

KFS currently ferries over 6,500 vehicles and more than 320,000 pedestrians daily across the channel.

The Kenya Ferry Services has increased charges for vehicles crossing the Likoni Channel by between 25 and 35 per cent.

The state owned entity cited need to boost efficiency as the reason behind the increase in toll charges last reviewed in 2012.

“The review of the toll charges has been approved by the government via the Kenya Gazette.

"We appeal to all our ferry users to comply with the new rates,” reads a notice from the management.

As per the new toll fees, vehicles between 3.5 and 4.5 metres long will now pay one dollar and twenty cents (Sh120) up from less than a dollar (Sh90).

Pick-ups trucks toll charges increased by Sh30 and will now be charged Sh150 ($1.5), up from Sh120 ($1.2).

Tourist vans tool charges has gone up by Sh50 and will now pay Sh280 ($2.8) up from Sh220, about two dollars.

Passenger buses fees have been shot up the highest to now Sh1,100 ($11) from Sh880.
