World Bank grants Kenya Sh2.6 billion to address water challenges

The water crisis in Kenya remains critical with 41 per cent of its population still relying on unimproved water sources

Through its International Development Agency, the lender's grant will address water security challenges in the country including overall basin planning and management.

Some of the targeted regions include the Athi Basin, Lake Victoria, South and North Rift valley, Ewaso Ngiro North and Tana basins.

According to Water.org, the water crisis in Kenya remains critical with 41 per cent of its population still relying on unimproved water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells and rivers.

Only 9 out of 55 public water service providers in Kenya provide continuous water supply.

Rationing

Water rationing in Nairobi is however set to continue owing to low levels at Ndakaini Dam, one of the city's main water supply towers.

“The rationing of water in Nairobi will have to continue...possibly in three years, we will be able to arrest the challenge up to 80 per cent and 100 per cent by the year 2030," said Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui
