United joins American Airlines in telling US immigration officials not to fly children separated from their families on its planes (UAL, AAL)

United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz said in a statement on Wednesday that he has told the US government that it should not fly children separated from their families by immigration officials on his airline's planes.

United Airlines said in a statement on Wednesday that it had informed the US government that it "should not" fly children who have been separated from their families by immigration officials on its planes.

"Our company's shared purpose is to connect people and unite the world," United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz said in the statement. "This policy and its impact on thousands of children is in deep conflict with that mission and we want no part of it."

United's statement comes hours after a similar announcement from American Airlines, in which the Texas-based carrier said, "

American Airlines, United, and several other major US carriers are under contract with the government to provide transportation services for a myriad of purposes, including employee work trips and even deportations.

Neither American nor United could find any evidence showing that immigrant children separated from their families had been flown on their planes, according to their statements.
