Although these drinks are advertised as giving an added boost and alertness, none of these claims have been supported by any medical or pharmaceutical companies. Instead, they have been found to be more hazardous than helpful especially as the higher the amount consumed, the higher the risks.

1. They contain taurine which may be toxic

Taurine is a popular ingredient in energy drinks. It is an amino acid that supports neurological development and helps regulate the level of water and mineral salts in the blood. Although the actual side effects are unknown, it is not recommended to intake more than 3,000 mg a day.

Energy drinks themselves can be dehydrating, and often people replace drinking water with the drinks. Dehydration can lead to muscle soreness, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. It is important to drink extra water if energy drinks are being taken.
