6 African animals that are killed for world fashion

Every year, millions of animals are killed for the clothing industry all in the name of fashion.

Whether we’re speaking of leather, fur, wool, feathers or silk, animals are killed under some of the most horrific conditions imaginable, in order to produce the clothing and accessories that most of us wear.

Here are six African animals sought after by the fashion world.

Elephant

Elephants are among the most sought-after in Africa. But the biggest threat they face is not from hunters, it is from poachers. Elephants are slaughtered by highly organized, armed, commercial poachers who sell ivory and organs to the market. Ivory is used decorative purposes.

African Buffalo

Their leather is the most prized because they are considered the most dangerous to hunt, and therefore the most expensive. Skin is used for leather. The African buffalo or Cape buffalo is a large African bovine.

Leopard

Probably the greatest use of animal skins for articles of clothing and accessories is the use of leather. The leopard is used for leather. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia.

African wild dog

The African wild dogis a canid native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest of its family in Africa. The skin is used for clothing items. Skin is used for leather.

Lion

Lions live on the grassy, open savannahs of Africa, not in the jungle. The wildcat stays on top as the biggest game trophy. According to conservationists lion hunting is one of the most lucrative trophy hunts. This is a fur animal.

Cheetah

Animal prints are no longer the preserve of ageing rockers, cave women or soap stars. Cheetah fur fabrics is a very powerful runway item.  The cheetah is a large felid of the subfamily Felinae that occurs mainly in eastern and southern Africa and a few parts of Iran
