Kenya grappling to remain plastic-bag free 5 months after ban

Kenyans still sneaking plastic bags from Uganda five months after ban

Kenya is still grappling to keep the country plastic-bag free as the carrier bags are still finding their way to the country in the border towns.

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) said traders are sneaking the bags from neighbouring countries, especially Uganda, despite the ban being in effect for five months.

“We have information that some business operators are still getting the commodity in bulk from the neighbouring countries, mainly Uganda, despite the ban that took effect in August 2017,” said Nema’s Chief Enforcement Officer Robert Orina.

“The small bags are in circulation…and are usually in display during odd hours,” he added.

Mr. Orina said the main target of the illegal business are small scale traders who sell goods like vegetables and snacks in small portions.

He was speaking in Nakuru in an operation to raid the illegal plastic bags businesses in the town following a tip-off from residents. The officials were however unable to arrest any culprit in connection to the matter.
