It is the reason why more and more tourists flock the continent each year to witness some of the world's most endangered species as well as the astonishing patterns of migration.

Business Insider SSA looks at some of the continent's top national parks and game reserves as listed by World Travel Awards.

It was voted Africa's leading national park at the recently held World Travel Awards 2017. The Mara has been described as the most prolific wildlife real-estate on earth and is perhaps Africa's greatest safari destination.

It is best known for the "Great Migration" where an estimated 2.5 million animals make a round-trip journey of 2,000 kilometers across the Serengeti ecosystem between Tanzania and Kenya

  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is mainly occupied by the San Bushmen who have lived there for approximately 30,000 years. It is best known for its limitless desert wilderness and the tough Kalahari lions.

  • Etosha National Park, Namibia

Etosha National Park is Namibia's premier wildlife venue and one of Africa's most hypnotic landscapes. Most popular for cheetah spotting and waterhole stakeouts.

  • Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda

The sprawling landscapes as well as sprawling savannah and soaring mountains is perhaps why Kidepo Valley National Park is regarded as the most picturesque park in Africa. It was once the playground of the late president Idi Amin and you can still visit the haunting ruins of a lodge that could just as easily have been designed as a massive bunker.

  •  Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park is South Africa's flagship park, famous for the great diversity of habitats that can be found in the 300 kilometers of wilderness that lie between the Limpopo and the Crocodile rivers.

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Serengeti National Park is a large conservation area located in the north of Tanzania. And just like the Maasai Mara National Park, Serengeti is famed for the wildebeest migration.
