Alcoholism is no laughing matter and Chipukeezy at NACADA is a dry joke

Even if you decide to turn a blind eye on his academic background, Chipukeezy has one major flaw that summarily disqualifies him - he is a delusional clown who suffers from acute inferiority complex.

  • Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday appointed Comedian Vincent Mwasia, popular known as Chipukeezy, to the board of NACADA.
  • It is hard to see what meaningful benefit he will add to the board meetings apart from, say, providing comical relief.
  • Late last year, the comedian become the subject of a shameful scandal after he was busted lying about his trip to the US.
  • One of the major challenges Kenya faces in its fight against alcoholism is overzealous potbellied government officials who think fighting alcoholism is pouring it on the streets and taking tough after choking on the fumes of burnt alcohol.

Through government Gazette Notice dated 5th June 2018, Chipukeezy - a young comedian who hails from Eastern Kenya - will join the NACADA board as a member alongside George Ogalo.

Upon the release of the publication, the comedian, who only possesses a high school certificate and credits cracking cheap tribal jokes as his sole ticket to fame, thanked the president and promised to work hard towards fighting alcoholism in Kenya, his qualifications notwithstanding

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank God, H.E the President, the Deputy President for the appointment into the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board (NACADA.) This is very humbling and I promise to work very hard towards ensuring that the task ahead is accomplished as per expectations,” Chipukeezy said.

His appointment will run for a period of three years, effective May 30, 2018.

While Chipukeezy is a Kenyan and deserves an equal chance at employment, more so a plum government job with a fat paycheck, there is nothing funny about his employment.

It is hard to see what meaningful benefit he will add to the board meetings apart from, say, providing comical relief.

Alcoholism is no laughing matter and it is a sobering fact how the former student of Tala High School whose only real academic interaction about alcoholism is reading it in high school set books and plays will help slay the alcoholism monster in Kenya.

In a country where 61 per cent of the population use alcohol with the highest abusers being young adults aged between 15 and 29 according to NACADA, Kenya does not need a clown at the helm of the countries’ sole body mandated to rid it of the vice.

NACADA needs a serious board of qualified individuals, even former and struggling addicts, who have invested their lifetime getting acquitted with the latest trends in drug abuse. A board that can advise the president about the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana, benefits and medical marijuana etc. sober issues Chipukeezy has no clue about.

As a result of his massive shortcoming, Chipukeezy is likely to become a rubber stamp of whatever the board decides, we will ban alcohol, Chipukeezy yes sir! We should impose night bans, yes sir!, just another clueless Kenyan eating taxpayers’ money.

One of the major challenges Kenya faces in its fight against alcoholism is overzealous potbellied government officials who think fighting alcoholism is pouring it on the streets and taking tough after choking on the fumes of burnt alcohol. Kenya needs sober-headed experts to craft policies which encourages beer companies to lower their prices of alcohol in order to make even the poorest drunk see sense in consuming safe and clean liquor.

Why is it Tanzania and Uganda who consume and brew more alcoholic drinks than Kenya, it will be hard for you to find media headlines screaming about dozens of souls rendered blind or worse killed after consuming unsafe alcohol yet Kenya keeps staggering from one calamity after another.

I am sure a walk down University of Nairobi or even any middle-level college will give you a far more qualified individual than Chipukeezy.

It is high time Kenya stops rewarding the loudest mediocre individuals and for once get the fight against alcoholism right.

Even if you decide to turn a blind eye on his academic background, Chipukeezy has one major flaw that summarily disqualifies him  from sitting at the Nacada board leave alone begin discussing  any topic about alcoholism - he is a delusional clown who suffers from acute inferiority complex.

The first rule of beating any addiction is accepting that one has a problem and sadly acceptance is not one of Chipukeezy's strengths.

Late last year, the comedian become the subject of a shameful scandal after he was busted lying about his trip to the US.

The comedian gave credit to an unidentified “white lady” as the person who helped him meet his idol and celebrated movie star, Kevin Hart.

It later emerged that the so-called “white lady” was actually a good-willed Kenyan girl, Wawira, who went out of her way to assist him.

“You are the white lady in that script….I was just trying to save my image girl,” he said when the real story leaked.

Now if a black skinned African can choose to invent a white lady from thin air in a bid to look cool that in my opinion is being ‘drunk enough’ to never begin talking about alcoholism leave alone sit in a board discussing how to convince a society about the dangers of alcoholism and the need of accepting alcoholism as a real problem.

Maybe he could be more useful in Kenya Film Classification Board but then again two clowns can never share the same stage, or can they?
