While speaking at a public rally in Chalinze town, about 100km west of the main city Dar es Salaam, Mr. Magufuli said schoolgirls who get pregnant will not be allowed back to school.

“Ukishapata mimba ni Kwaheri Translated:(After getting pregnant, you are done.)He said on Monday.

Magufuli added allowing young mothers to continue with their education would be a mistake since they would be distracted if they were allowed back in school.

"After calculating some few mathematics, she'd be asking the teacher in the classroom: 'Let me go out and breastfeed my crying baby.'"

The president further warned that men who impregnate the school girls will not go scoot free.

“For those responsible for the pregnancy whether a fellow student or a non-student there is a law waiting for you, the girl will go and raise her baby and the guy would serve his 30years jail term “he warned.

Magufuli has added that his administration will not bow under pressure from non-governmental organisations to tolerate student pregnancies

“These NGOs can open their own schools for parents. But I will not give funds to educate parents,” Magufuli said.

"I'm giving out free education for students who have really decided to go and study, and now you want me to educate the parents?" he posed.

At least 8,000 Tanzanian girls drop out of school every year due to pregnancy, according to a Human Rights Watch report.

A law passed in 2002 however allows for expulsion of pregnant schoolgirls.

The law says the girls can be expelled and excluded from school for "offences against morality" and "wedlock".

Tanzanians have however condemned Magufuli’s  remark’s and took to social media to express their outrage.

They have even set up an online petition to get the president reverse his remarks.

Tanzanians are also using #ArudiShule (let her return) on Twitter to criticise the president's comments and have the girls allowed back to school.
