5 Kenyan public officials who have come face to face with the cruel face of terror

Several Kenyan public officials have come face to face with the cruel face of terror with some being lucky enough to live to tell the tale.

The public official had sadly succumbed to gun wounds she had received at the hands of Al Shabaab terror group while undergoing treatment in South Africa.

On July 13, Mariam was shot and injured in the shoulder and on legs by Al Shabaab who also abducting her at Milihoi area on the Mpeketoni-Lamu road before she was rescued by a joint team of the Kenya Defence Forces and the General Service Unit.

Mariam El Maawy is however not alone who has had a brush with the crude face of terror.

Daudi Wabera

Isiolo DC Daudi Wabera, after whom Wabera Street is named was killed by Somali shiftas in 1963.

His killing is said to have been orchestrated by Premier Ali Shemarke of Somalia.

Wabera's assassination sparked off a grueling shifta (Somali for 'bandit') war that took years to end, and whose effects are felt to this day in NEP.

42 police officers

The most deadly attack on the police in Kenya’s history occurred in 2012.

At least 42 officers were killed when cattle rustlers ambushed police n Baragoi in the northern Samburu County as they attempted to recover stolen cattle.

Peter Simani

An aviation and communications expert and a lawyer by training, Peter Simani was meeting a friend at Westgate mall on Saturday when the militants burst in.

He and his friend both died in the attack.

Peter Simani chaired the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and was also a director of the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).

Yusuf Hassan Abdi

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan survived by a whisker from getting killed by Al Shabaab militia in December 2012,

The MP luckily survived a grenade attack at a mosque in his constituency in Nairobi, where seven people, including two children died.

The lawmaker, who still uses crutches, was bed-ridden for months and after he got better, he had to use a wheel chair.

Ali Roba

Mandera governor, Ali Roba holds the record for surviving the most terror attempts on his life than any other public official in Kenya.

Mr. Roba has survived a record five attempts on his life and on August 8th survived negotiated democracy to be re-elected Mandera governor.

Salah Farah

Salah Farah, a Muslim school teacher was fatally shot as he shielded Christians after a passenger bus was ambushed by suspected al-Shabab militants.

Mr Farah succumbed to his gun wounds on 18th January in Nairobi.

He was posthumously awarded one of Kenya’s most prestigious honours, the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya "in recognition of his remarkable act of valour" in defending his fellow citizens.
