Flying chairs, exchange of blows—how Uganda"s parliament turned chaotic during age limit debate

Chaotic scenes marred Uganda's parliament when MPs exchanged blows and threw chairs at each other during the Presidential age limit debate

Uganda’s Parliament was on Tuesday afternoon thrown into chaos as Members of Parliament fought and threw chairs at each other during the Presidential age limit debate.

The brawl erupted shortly after shortly after Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said the Order Paper had been amended to include the controversial Raphael Magyezi’s motion to amend the age limit cap on presidential candidates.

The Citizen reports that the House proceedings were interrupted for about 20 minutes with Ms Kadaga just looking on.

Busongora North MP William Nzoghu alleged that one of the legislators had entered in the House with a gun sparking more chaos as some members tried to exchange blows.

The Speaker was then asked to adjourn the House for security personnel to conduct a thorough search on each one of the MPs. Ms Kadaga however said she could not adjourn the proceedings on mere allegations.

The situation later got out of hand as chairs started flying and some MPs had to fly to safety while others tried to calm those who were baying for blood.

A fist fight almost broke out between Lwemiyaga County MP, Theodore Ssekikubo and State Minister for Water, Mr Ronald Kibuule.

Another scuffle erupted before 4pm as police denied Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi access to the building because of his ‘red bandana’.

Many Ugandans in urban centres have been sharing pictures of themselves wearing the red ribbon that has become a symbol of protest against lifting the age limit.

#Togikwatako is Luganda for “Don’t touch it “- in reference to the constitution.
