3 instances where Kenya’s capital turned chaotic once Raila jetted back

Kenya’s capital grinds to a standstill whenever Kenya’s opposition leader jets back to the country from one of his numerous overseas trips.

Clad in Orange Democratic party colours and National Resistance Movement regalia, chanting songs and blowing whistle they usually bring business to a standstill as they march to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) causing traffic grid locks to no ends.

Here are just a few instance the opposition leader has brought Kenya’s capital to a standstill.

10-day tour in the US

Raila Odinga jetted back to the country on Friday after a ‘successful’ 10-day tour in the US where he was scheduled to to deliver a speech at the Centre for Security and International Studies (CSIS) as well hold a series of high level meetings and talks with various leaders on reforming Kenya’s democratic processes.

Despite police declaring JKIA out of bounds, Some 200 supporters, including women, beat the security cordon and entered the airport.

Hundreds of his supporters, the majority on foot, turned up in large to accompany him and police had a rough time controlling traffic on Mombasa Road.

Business in Nairobi, come to a standstill as police tried to block the opposition leader with his supporters from accessing Uhuru Park.

Three people were shot dead by the police in the process.

London Tour

The Nasa leader flew out of the country early October for a three day visit to United Kingdom where he held set meetings with leaders from the UK business community and politicians from the European nation about his withdrawal from the October 26 repeat presidential election.

Before flying back he also meet with Kenyans living in the UK and jetted back to the county on Sunday morning.

As usual, hundreds of his supporters turned up to meet him paralyzing business in Nairobi.

Even more puzzling is Raila brought sections of London street to a standstill as Jubilee and NASA protesters braved the chilly weather of London to protest

IEBC Weekly Demos

For months before and after Kenya's General Election, sections of Nairobi City were at complete standstill as thousands of NASA supporters held weekly protests calling for electoral reforms.

University way where Kenya's Electoral body, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is located was a no go zone as NASA supporters and Police clashed and engaged in running battles.

For hours sometime days the nauseating smell of teargas hanged in the air, shops closed and business at standstill.
