Online shopping has grown rapidly in the African content.

Retailers are now finding it more easier to connect with their customers online thanks to the immense growth of technology in Africa.

Consumers are now more inclined towards online shopping; presenting a good opportunity for start-ups and other companies involved in E-commerce to grow.

Business Insider SSA takes a look at some of these top online shopping websites:

1. Jumia

Formerly known as Africa Internet Group (AIG), Jumia is without doubt one of Africa’s largest E-commerce sites. The site was formed in 20212 in Nigeria but now boasts of a presence in 16 African countries.

The online shopping website offers a wide variety of products ranging from electronics, beauty products, men and women fashion, health and fitness, baby or kids’ products and many more.

2. Zando

Founded by Rocket Internet AG in 2012, Zando has over the years experienced a steady growth in its business to become a big e-retailer store in South Africa.

Zando, a subsidiary to parent company, The Jumia Group, sells over 500 brands, including footwear, apparel, homeware, beauty products and our very own in-house brands, like Utopia.

3. Konga

Konga, Nigeria’s number one online shopping site, was founded in Juky 2012 by Sim Shagaya. It began as a small Lagos-only online retailer but later expanded its wings to the to the whole country.

The platform was launched with an with the aim of becoming a provider of e-commerce infrastructure services for all e-commerce market participants.

4. Cheki.com

It is the biggest online market place for cars in Africa with a presence in at least 8 countries including Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya. The online marketplace is an advertising medium for users to buy and sell their cars, 4WDs, vans, bikes and trucks and other vehicles.

Cheki is a division of One Africa Media which operates and invests in leading marketplace websites in several East and West African countries.

5. Takealot.com

Takealot.com is South Africa’s largest, most innovative ecommerce website, with over 800 employees.

The e-retailer has over 19 departments that deal with electronics, lifestyle, media & gaming and fashion among others.

6. Tonaton

Tonaton prides itself as Ghana’s largest marketplace. Launched in 2013, the e-commerce site has become the leading online choice for great blue collar and entry-level jobs and deals on electronics, cars, property and general items such as clothing, pets and furniture.

7. Bid or Buy

Bid or Buy was officially launched with a massive marketing campaign in January 2000 and within months propelled its way to become one of South Africa’s leading e-business site.

The site offers a platform users, buyers and sellers, transact with each other. It is also among the very few e-commerce sites that accepts bitcoin as payment.

8. Kaymu

Kaymu initially launched in Nigeria and Pakistan in January 2013 and within 27 months opened operations in 32 other countries.

The platform lets buyers and sellers meet to make deals on new and used fashion items, mobile phones and home appliances among others.
