Mombasa County

It is listed in the constitution as the number 001 county.

The county is situated in the South Eastern part of the former Coast Province. It borders Kilifi County to the North, Kwale County to the South West and the Indian Ocean to the East.

Administratively, the county is divided into seven divisions, eighteen locations and thirty sub-locations. IEBC estimates that the county has a total of 454,799 potential voters.

The county and the city are divided into four divisions namely:

  • Mombasa Island – 14.1 km²
  • Changamwe – 54.5 km²
  • Likoni – 51.3 km²
  • Kisauni - 109.7 km²

Constituency

The county is composed of six Parliamentary constituencies:

Mombasa County lies within the coast lowland, which rises gradually from the sea level in the east to slightly over 76 m above sea level in the mainland west. The highest point is at Nguu Tatu hills in the mainland North that rises up to 100 m above sea level.

Population

According to the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census, the population was 939,370 people with a population density of 4,292 people per Km2.

Education and Literacy

Mombasa’s education standards have been greatly affected by drug abuse and the alshabab radicalization of youth. A majority of youth at 40% have not made it beyond standard eight.

All the major commercial banks have branches in Coastal City.

Health

There are a total of 311 health facilities spread across the county. These are 1 referral facility, 2 District hospitals, 41 dispensaries, 8 health centres and 259 uncategorized facilities.

Prominent hospitals include; Coast Provincial General Hospital, Port Reitz and Agha Khan Hospital.

Economy

The main economic activity includes tourism which contributes to 68% of the wage employment. Others are fishing, farming of sisal, sugarcane, cashew nuts, and coconuts and livestock farming,

Various manufacturing firms have set up base in the County including Bamburi Cement Company at Bamburi. Other industries include petroleum refining, food processing, salt and sand.
