Officials on the Spot after Sh110 Million Goes Missing from Uhuru’s Office

Officials in the Office of the President have been put on the spot after the Auditor General Edward Ouko revealed that Sh163 million could not be accounted for.

The missing cash was meant for the salaries of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, as well as former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

Ouko states that after the audit of the ledger and payroll expenses for year ended 2017, there was a variance of Sh111, 893,262 from the payments made in the year ended in 2016.

The ledger showed that Sh148.5 million was directed towards the salaries, pension, and allowances of the respective beneficiaries but the payroll showed that only Sh36.6 million was paid out.

Ouko’s audit report reveals that the Office of the President and the National Treasury had not explained the significant variance.

“The ledger and the payroll expense for the year ended June 30 2016 are at variance and the National Treasury has not carries out reconciliation nor given any explanation,” Ouko notes.

The pension paid to the two former Presidents rose by 15.6 percent which translated to about Sh10 million.
