NASA leaders led by Siaya Senator James Orengo were on Friday afternoon teargassed by police on Kenyatta Avenue while trying to stage demos in Nairobi CBD.

Police officers lobbed teargas cannisters at the NASA legislators' convoy after they left Capital Hill offices as they were proceeding to the Nairobi CBD.

Orengo had minutes earlier addressed a press conference at Capitol Hill where he said that NASA supporters would defy the order by acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s to ban demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu CBDs.

“We want to condemn Mr. Matiang’i for claiming that we cannot enjoy our rights to picket and demonstrate. It is the responsibility of the police to provide security during demonstrations held within the law. From here, we’ll be headed to the CBD for anti-IEBC demos, we have notified the police about these demonstrations,” Orengo vowed during the press conference.
