Fears have emerged over the ability of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct the repeat presidential elections after a worrying new discovery.

It has now emerged that the technology to be used for the October 17 elections may not be ready in time for the voting exercise.

According to the Standard, the technology used to identify voters and transmit results, (Kenya Integrated Elections Management System – KIEMS) will have to be upgraded.

The suppliers of the kits, French Company Safran Morpho have expressed their worries that the reconfigured kits may not be ready on time for the elections.

Sources indicate that Safran sent a letter on Thursday saying they will not be able to meet the deadline for reconfiguration and upgrading the system ahead of Election Day.

The French firm also raised concerns about accusations by NASA that they contributed in the bungling of the August 8 elections which was nullified by the Supreme Court which cited irregularities and illegalities in the entire process.

NASA has accused the company of conniving with top IEBC officials to bungle the election.

The coalition’s legal team is working with civil society organisations in France to open charges against Safran whom they accuse of conniving with top IEBC officials to bungle the election.

In a September 7 letter, Nasa co-principal Musalia Mudavadi, wrote to the French government demanding action against Safran and Morpho.

“We wish to bring to your attention that in providing the said ICT support services to the commission, the subject companies have been involved in unethical acts that may amount to criminal activities under the Elections Act and the Elections Offences Act of the Laws of Kenya,” he wrote.

Safran has ruled out supplying new kits due to the strict election time-lines as it takes too long to manufacture and deliver them hence the request of having the kits reconfigured.
