On Sunday, NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga had threatened to boycott the Election if CEO Ezra Chiloba was not fired."Chiloba team must go home. These were the prime suspects who were involved in the shambolic elections. They should be prosecuted for election offences.
"we still maintain that we are not ready to participate if the people we mentioned are not fired,'' Odinga made the declaration.
It seemed that Chiloba would have been sidelined for the fresh polls until Chebukati backtracked his decision on Monday to sideline him for the upcoming polls.Last week, Chebukati had named a new team to oversee the October 17 elections but dropped the IEBC CEO. However, after the IEBC retreat in Naivasha, the electoral body buried the hatchet and picked Chiloba to spearhead the new team.Addressing the press on Monday evening, Chebukati announced that Chiloba had been given the task of assessing the problems experienced in the just concluded Election.
"The CEO has been tasked to assess the implementation challenges that were experienced during the just -concluded General Election and propose a project implementation framework that is aligned with the existing organisational structure,” Chebukati told journalists in Naivasha. The Chebukati led team also urged the country to be patient and promised to deliver a free and fair election with the commissioners agreeing to work together moving forward. After the latest twist, it remains to be seen what NASA will do next after pushing for the exit of Chiloba whom they accused of being used to manipulate the August 8 election. On the other hand, Jubilee has rejected the new team meant to oversee the presidential election accusing the officials of being partisan.
During an interview on Sunday, DP William Ruto claimed that Chebukati had been holding night meetings with Opposition leaders, allegations the chairman vehemently denied.
