Citizen TV’s Kanze Dena reveals why she does not use her English name

Kanze Dena explains why she dropped her English name after joining Citizen TV

Speaking during an interview, the Swahili anchor whose official name is Kellen Beatrice Kanze Dena, divulged that she decided to dropped the two names after landing the job at Citizen TV.

According to Kanze, her boss suggested that since she was anchoring news in Swahili it would be better not to use the English names and that was how she ended up adopting Kanze Dena

“My bosses thought that because I am reading Kiswahili it sounds too English to call myself Kellen Kanze so they asked me to do Kanze Dena and that is how I ended up using the last two names,” she said.

Ms. Kanze has for the past five years anchored news alongside Lulu Hassan. The two have an amazing rapport and are the only female duo presenting news on National TV.

“My most defining moment was being able to be part of the first female duo to be on air and to actually make it work because you know it is not easy to work with women,” she said.

She describes her relationship with Lulu as good highlighting that she was amazed when they first anchored together without scripts and were able to complete each other's sentences.

"When we were covering elections in 2013 we went to studio and we did not have scripts as nothing had come up. So we had to come up with stories to tell guys so that we can keep them glued as we waited for information to come. That was when we realized yaani we are just completing each other’s sentences. It is like she is thinking what I am thinking,” she said.
