A father did not like the fact that his daughter was having an affair and decided to kill her lover.
According to prosecutors, Elewana, a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) worker, shot and killed 22-year-old Douglas Ojugbo over suspicion that he was having an affair with the suspect’s daughter Mercy.
Elewana then called acquaintances and had them write up a false report about the man’s death.
Self-defense
According to court records, Elewana said that he shot Ojugbo in self-defense when the young man, who was armed, broke into his home in a failed armed robbery.
He also arranged for the “armed robber” to be buried without being identified. Authorities eventually learned about the incident and Elewana was arrested.
Investigators found evidence that the crime was premeditated.
Hang
During sentencing, Justice Ukpa Ebitam said the prosecution team proved their case and they had substantial evidence leading to the conviction of the suspect.
Elewana, who has been in prison since his arrest, was sentenced to death by hanging.
The victim’s mother was very happy with the outcome of the case. Maria Ojugbo believes that justice has been done for her son.
“I thank God for doing what should be done. It is stated in the Bible that anyone who kills by the sword will die by the sword. Elewana had no reason whatsoever to kill my son in such a manner and conceal the act by burying him,” Ojugbo said.
