Kenyan farmers use "Busaa" to treat deadly disease

This idea came from the elders.

The cows of these farmers who live in Rongai town, have said that they tried to get help from political leaders but were denied access to them.

"We haven't seen them since they were last here begging for our votes," said one resident.

After the cattle were seen urinating blood, foaming at the mouth and limping- they were forced to go to their elders to find traditional ways to treat their animals.

The elders suggested busaa- which is a local brew that authorities occasionally refer to as illicit.

The farmers explained that they were forced to contract middlemen to help them get busaa.

The busaa along with its shrubbery and leaves is applied to the afflicted cow's mouth so as to treat it. They explained that their livelihoods depended on the cattle.

A county officer expressed his concern that the residents would be forced to create their own brew to treat their cattle which would create a problem for the government which is trying to crack down on illegal brewing of alcohol.
