In a very sad case, a 71-year-old grandmother is fighting for her life at Wesu hospital in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County after a rape ordeal at her home in Lushangonyi village.
According to her daughter, the woman is still in critical condition after being admitted at the hospital on Saturday last week.
“She is still in a coma and her situation continues to deteriorate day by day,” she said.
All alone
She said her mother was alone on that fateful night.
The granny lives with her granddaughter who on that particular night had spent the night at her mother’s home a few kilometres away.
“The neighbours called me and I rushed home to take her to hospital,” the daughter narrated.
“I suspected that she might have been sexually abused and indeed the doctor confirmed my fears. Since then she has been receiving treatment but so far no improvements,” she said.
Stangled
She said the woman also suffered injuries on her neck and thighs.
“The assailant(s) took advantage of her and it seems she was strangled because her neck is swollen. It seems they wanted to prevent her from wailing for help during the ordeal,” she said.
She said the hospital has referred her to Coast General Hospital in Mombasa for a head scan but the family can not afford the sh12, 000 charges due to financial constraints.
