There’s that one person in the office who is always getting positive recognition from the bosses. Nope, he doesn’t do extra work or chip in during the meetings more than the rest of you but somehow everyone (even you) can’t deny that he’s having an easier time at work than the rest. You’re not even sure when he aced that highly coveted promotion, but he did. It’s not magic and he’s definitely not sleeping his way up the ladder (primitive thinking) but he’s doing it.

There are a lot of things that set apart successful people from the slackers at the office. It goes beyond keeping a low personal profile and always chipping in during meetings. Read on.

1. Set daily goals.

Instead of the once a month reviews (or none) personal review of how you spent your money, ‘achievables’ and mistakes, successful people set clearly defined goals for their everyday which helps in smart adjustments when something comes up. This way they always deliver.

2. Uses the 45/15 rule.

While you’re typing three sentences and exchanging a few more with your colleague, a successful person spends 45 minutes of their time fully focused on what they have to do and then spares 15 to recuperate and socialize.

3. Speaking of socializing… successful people don’t keep toxic relationships.

Instead of picking up a relationship with everyone who smiles at them, successful people understand the power of keeping small healthy circles at the work place. You only need to know the person with the potential to help you grow.

4. They pause before they speak.

Usually this is phrase is applied when advising on conflict resolution, what most people don’t know is that small talk can affect one’s perception of you. Instead of getting carried away with the funny carefree mood that’s hyping your conversation, take time and think through your first reaction to every question posed your way.

5. They befriend the scariest boss.

You know the one that nobody likes?

Instead of dashing out of sight whenever the ‘big bad monster is walking past’ be at ease and say hi. Successful people know how to fess up and come up with a way to solve their issues with their bosses. Also, you’ll notice a natural silence with them when everyone else is trash talking the bosses.
