Speaking on Tuesday during the orientation of new university council members in Naivasha, Mr Sakah stated that this was because the institutions were now centers of radicalization and recruitment by extremists and terrorist organization.

Mr Sakah noted that: “A number of University students have been reported missing only to be traced in Somalia or Syria where it is believed they are training with the al Shabaab or ISIS for deployment in Islamic Caliphates”.

A report by the Commission for University Education indicated that in 2016 ,44 students - 17 of them girls – from both public and private Varsities had joined terror groups in Somalia and Libya.

Mr Sakah highlighted that the terrorists were targeting Universities because of their low capacities for armed resistance, lack of preparedness and surprise element.

“Unethical hackers have been reported to intrude into systems of government institutions, public universities and private organizations for various reasons.

“Hackers have the capacity to intrude into insecure university administration systems and to alter examination marks, grades of students and financial fraud,” Sakah said.

Of the students who have been arrested heading for al Shabaab recruitment, many were pursuing medicine, law biochemical engineering, nursing among others.

Mr Sakah further stated according to recent cases of recruitment, it emerged that the terrorists were after the best brains in Kenya.
