Sensational singer, Dela Maranga is quite the charmer. Her diverse sense of style as been a household topic for quite a while. She walked into our office last Friday and guess what? She finally talked about her blue hair.

What does fashion mean to you?

I’m not a fashion head like most people. I take a more practical approach. For me, it got to be functional, comfortable and appropriate for the occasion.

We’ve seen you in some pretty interesting outfits.  How do you select your outfits for your performances?

Short answer, I have a stylist (Laughs). Still I give her an idea of what I want and how the dancers should like then she does the rest. My style on stage is usually determined by what the theme of my performance. When I’m just standing and singing on the microphone then I’d go for a long evening dress, other times when I need to dance I go for outfits that can allows me to do so, you know, shorts or skirts, I’m not limited to one particular thing.

Tell us about the blue hair

It's part of my brand. Before this I used to change my hairstyle a lot. I realized I needed something permanent for consistency when people couldn’t recognize me with the different hairstyles.

Your real hair?

I had long permed hair but it kept cutting. So I shaved it and let it grow naturally. It’s sizable right now but I can’t the amount of work needed to maintain it that way. Sometimes I come from gigs super tired. Who has the energy to start twisting hair in the middle of the night?   I walk around with my natural hair when I’m doing my personal things but I’m good with my weaves.

Pick your poison. Handbags, clothes or shoes?

What’s your favorite pair?

It’s hard to decide. They are so many, I stopped counting. Sometimes when I am going through my closet I find pairs I even forgot I own and have to put them at the front to remember to wear them.  However, I could rock black leather red bottom heels every day. They go with anything.

How many times do you shop for shoes?

Firstly, I’m not an impulse buyer. My shopping is very deliberate but not with a specific timeline. This week I bought three, next week I might buy a pair. It depends with what I am feeling or what my wallet is feeling rather. (Laughs)

If given a chance, whose wardrobe would you like to raid?

Kim Kardashian or Rihanna. Mostly Rihanna since she’s curated the crazy in her fashion sense. I already go for the laid back things so if I was to raid one, id’ give crazy a chance.

If we took you to a jewelry shop, what would be your first pick?

I’d pick up a ring. I like the elaborate ones with a lot of detail. Earrings for me are not a must. I have a lot of loops and very few studs. I’m not a necklace kind of person. I don’t think that they are as liberating as the others, you can’t wear them all the time.

You’ve also got really cool makeup. What’s your routine?

Here’s a shocker, I’m a wash, lotion and go kind of girl. I try to avoid makeup as much as possible. I rarely do it unless I have to appear on screen or go for an event. The other times I just wash up, brush my eyebrows for a bit on neatness and leave. However, I don’t miss a stick of lip color in my purse.

So what’s your favorite brand?

Mac. It has so many varieties and really great products. I lean towards matte instead of gloss.

What is the one thing you wouldn’t leave the house without?

A comb and lipstick.

The Oscars are coming up this Sunday. If I gave you tickets right now, what would you wear?

I’d call up my stylists. They’d know what to do.

What about a chilled out day with friends?

I’d keep it really simple. Maybe a sun dress, rugged jeans or even just shorts. Like I said, practicality is my thing.

In your opinion, what fashion trend do you think everyone should drop?

There’s this shoe, I can’t call them gladiator sandals. They look like knee high boots with open sandal designed feet. Catch me dead in those. I don’t like them at all, especially when girls tuck in jeans in those shoes. Urgh!

Where do you shop?

I used to love going to Toy market, Gikomba and finding interesting things but now I can’t do that. I have someone who does the shopping then I select what I like from them.

After how long do you change your ward robe?

I give out a lot of things but I never change my ward robe. I get attached to things so I tend to keep them. Well, most of them.

If you had to incorporate one color in all of your outfits, what would it be?

Black. It matches with my hair and to be honest, I can wear black every day without a problem. However, it’s not my favorite color. I used to love yellow but now I’m madly in love turquoise.

What is the fashion rule you live by?

Be comfortable. If you have to keep pulling it down or it changes the way you walk then don’t wear it.
