Oversleeping is something that occasionally happens to people when they're tired. However it can be a chronic condition among a small group of people.

Adults should get about 7-9 hours of sleep. People who tend to oversleep need up to 12 hours to feel re-energised enough to tackle day.

Some people can even sleep for up to 15 hours at a time.

Hypersomnia typically starts in childhood.

  • Taking alcohol
  • Lack of enough sleep beforehand

The main health conditions that can cause oversleeping are:

  • certain medications

Oversleeping is something that should be taken seriously as it is something that can cause complications such as:

  • anxiety
  • low energy
  • memory loss
  • headaches
  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • back pain
  • depression
  • heart disease
  • increased risk of death.
