5 effective ways to make your flowers last longer

Don't watch them wither away

Flowers not only give the home space some life but also make your home smell fresh and give it a welcoming feel. While not all of us are frequent buyers of flowers, sometimes, we receive them as a gift say on our birthdays or other special occasions as a sign of appreciation and love. When you receive or buy flowers, you should take care of them so that they last longer without withering.

The first thing you need to do is clean your flower vase which BTW if you have none, you can improvise with a cut bottle, glass tumbler or even wine bottle at home. You should then cute an inch of the stems to allow for water intake. You should also remember to change the water after two or three days to keep off bacteria. There are many ways you can keep your flowers looking fresher for long without going back into your pockets and we have compiled the most effective ones.

If you’re always having to throw out your flowers from withering after three days, worry not, we will show you how to keep them looking fresh for up to ten days, hustle free.

1. Keep them in the fridge overnight.

This is the most effective ways of keep your flowers looking fresh. When going to bed, leave your bouquet in the fridge every night. The low temperatures prevent them from aging and keep them looking fresh and cool. Take them out in the morning and repeat the process till they’re completely withered.

2. Soda is your friend.

I’m sure you always have some soda in the fridge and even if you don’t have, you can buy some for the flowers. Pour about a quarter cup of soda in your vase. If your vase is clear, you can use colorless soda like sprite. The sugar in the soda is said to make the flowers last longer and even smell sweater.

3. Take a shot of Vodka and give your flowers some too.

Add a few drops of Vodka or clear spirit into your vase with water and flowers. The spirit’s ability to inhibit ethylene production, a ripening gas that helps plants mature, slows the ageing of the flowers.

4. Apple cider vinegar and sugar.

Apple Cider vinegar is readily available in the supermarkets and has so many uses so everyone should have some in the house. To preserve your flowers, mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar with the vase water before adding the flowers. When you’re changing the water, remember to add the same mixture for them to last longer.

5. Adding a coin in the flower vase.

If you have a copper coin lying around the house, add it to your fresh bouquet. The copper should act as an acidifier, fighting the bacteria growth.
