An oily skin can be frustrating in this extra hot weather. From looking greasy to patchy foundation, the list of things that could go wrong is endless.

It’s not the end of the world.

A lot of research has been done on how to control oily skin, here are the top need to know.

1. Makeup could be the problem

A lot of times women select make up according to what they’re friends recommend instead of what actually works for their skin. Taking on heavier products prevents your skin from breathing and sweating normally which leads to accumulation as pimples. Get your face tested first and consult a specialist before buying your make up.

2. You’re not alone

It’s easy to feel frustrated and insecure about an oily face since you always have to retouch your makeup unlike the other girls but, guess what? Having an oily face is very common in women and it varies with different times of the month.

3. Blame it on the hormones...

Hormones affect the oil glands in the skin and scalp and determine just how oily your face will be at different period of times in your body, sometimes it’s different every week.

4. ...Or your genes

This could also be genetic. The amount of oil glands and how they react to different stimulations is influenced by your genetics. That’s why you can find a whole lineage of daughters from grandmother to last daughter suffering from the same type of acne or type of skin.

Having figured out that your skin requires special attention means switching your cleaning routine to fit your oily skin type. How you cleanse is most important. Be sure not to remove too much oil or too little when cleaning your face. This could either lead to accumulation or excessive production for compensation. Use the right products too, as directed by your dermatologist.

6. Watch your diet

This is unnegotiable. Fat stores itself in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin and excessive consumption can lead to its excessive excretion. Keep a low fat diet and exercise for a leaner built with less fat in the body.

Switch your makeup for water or mineral based products that keep your face shine free and are noncomedogenic so that they won’t clog your pores.

8. Don't be scared of medical assistance

We always recommend that you go the natural way but if your oiliness persists, don’t wait for the black heads to start popping up before you do something about it. Keep your retinoids close by. Either in the form of pills or cream and apply at least once or twice a week to regulate oil secretion from your skin. Also, go for salicylic acid products instead of benzoyl peroxide that over dries your skin.


Look at the bright side, having an oily skin means that even as you age, you’re skin will remain taut and nourished while drier skin tend to look darker and wrinkled.
