Mr Awori deceived many that he had driven his car for 650 KM in reverse mode. This story hit headlines prompting multi-billion companies such Westlands Motors and DT Dobie sponsor him with vehicles.

According to the man, who was seemingly seeking global attention, he had set himself to beat world record holder, Gerald Hoagland – an American who had driven his vehicle for 102 Km in reverse.

“I took it as a personal challenge. If this American could do it, why not me?” Awori was quoted by a local daily.

Therefore to accomplish this, he 'drove' from Mombasa to Nairobi, then to Nakuru, Rongai and back to Nairobi to break the record.

Awori then sent this message to newsrooms and as the norm with companies - Westlands Motors gave him a new Toyota Corolla to drive – to seemingly align itself with the champion.

He even received a global award in a ceremony held at Hilton hotel, after which he announced to motor company executives that he planned to set off another world breaking-record by reversing a 7-tonne lorry from Nairobi to Mombasa.

Not to miss out on the opportunity, DT Dobie donated a giant Mercedez-Benz truck, for Awori to use in the challenge.

The motor company fueled the truck while the Daily Nation reported the story extensively.

Awori conveyed to the local daily that the Mr John Miller, an independent adjudicator for Guinness Book of Records, would travel to Nairobi to judge his stunt.

The journey set to commence on December 11 in Mombasa was even flagged off by assistant minister Shariff Nassir.

After the flagging off nobody accompanied Awori and no images were taken to prove that he actually made the trip.

However, what convinced the world was a message from ‘John Miller’ to newsroom confirming that Awori had broken the record.

With all the fame in the world, Awori decided to attend the “620-km Kiwi Auto Reverse Rally” in New Zealand’s Newbury Ranch Farm.

After the competition, another message was sent to the newsrooms confirming that “Awori has re-written motoring history by becoming the first African driver ever to win a contest in a European country.”

Yet again, there were no pictures capturing this world event.

All hell broke loose when the New Zealand High Commission in Nairobi said there was no such event.

Awori was summoned to produce the evidence but he had none.

It was established that Awori never travelled to New Zealand and no Guinness Book of Records representative came to Kenya.

Awori was exposed to have lied to the Daily Nation through the messages he sent to newsrooms from his Nairobi office on Mama Ngina Street.

The self-made celebrity had also received gifts worth thousands of shillings, air tickets, money and hotel accommodation from the lies he engineered.
