Kidero admits being helpless in dealing with land grabbing

Nairobi governor, Dr. Evans Kidero declares he is helpless in returning a parcel of land back to the county government.

Nairobi governor, Dr. Evans Kidero in a fiery manner today ‘threw up his hands in the air’ and declared that he was helpless, in returning a parcel of land which has been grabbed in Kayole back to the county government.

Dr. Kidero who was speaking at the land summit held at the state house, was demanding to know what action the ministry of lands and the national land commission were taking to ensure that the land reverts back to the county.

Nairobi County is locked in a land tussle dispute with the department of defense, (DOD) over a 5000 acres piece of land in Kayole which  both parties are claiming ownership.

Dr. Kidero went in details explaining how the county government is helpless, since even the police tasked with securing the land can’t face off with the army.

“The county government bought 5,000 acres of land from Kayole estate back in 1971. In the nineties the army invaded it and took 3,000 acres without due recourse to any compensation and four weeks ago, they blocked the remaining 2,000 acres that passed through the road"  the Nairobi governor explained as quoted by Capital Fm.

The simmering tension between the public and the army came to the fore last month. Led by their Member of county assembly, paul Kados residents of Mihango and Kayole took to the streets demanding for the opening of their main link road.

The residents were met with brute force from the army, who even arrested the MCA, perhaps underlying the ‘helplessness’ the county government of Nairobi is faced with.

“The road from mihango from the eastern by pass which has been joining Kangundo road through Matopeni is blocked and nobody dares challenge them because they have got guns, tanks and aircraft. We went to the police and they said no, they cannot handle that. The government will not come to court, they will not put a defense” Dr. Kidero argued his case.

The Cabinet secretary of Lands, Dr. Jacob Kaimenyi however cautioned the governor to look at the circumstances behind the acquisition.
