Lamu county government is expecting to reap big from the ongoing 16th edition of the Lamu cultural festival, 2016.

Over 30,000 local and foreign visitors are expected to grace the three day event which kicked off yesterday.  Lamu festival is an annual event which seeks to showcase the rich culture and heritage of Lamu Swahili people.

Among the activities lined up for visitors to indulge and loose themselves in, include donkey racing, dhow racing, sampling the Swahili cuisine, cultural and traditional dances and enjoying historical tours along the magical  coastal town full of historical masterpieces.

The acting county executive for tourism and culture, Khamis Kayiha told journalists that the county had allocated Ksh8million to organize the event.

Khamis also revealed that five governors are expected to attend the cultural event as well as a high profile list of international guests including ambassadors and a team of team of dancers from India and Oman.

“We are expecting more than five governors from the northern frontier counties of Tana River, Garissa, Mandera and even Marsabit to attend this year’s event” Khamis told daily nation.

Lamu economy is expected to enjoy a fresh injection of cash/revenue especially after it had been hard hit by drought and insecurity.

A host of cultural events are normally organised all year round in Lamu and goes a long way in projecting Lamu as one of the world’s favorite destination.

According to Rough Guides, 2016. A United Kingdom travel publication, Kenya was ranked ninth globally and first in Africa top ten world destinations. Lamu County prides itself with some of the richest marine ecology, white pristine beaches not to mention one of the oldest heritage in Kenya, dating back to the 14th century.
