7 lessons Kenyans can learn from the Royal wedding

Too much makeup and other things that are not necessary!

There were some things that Meghan chose to do differently; she went for a simple but elegant dress and actually ditched the makeup for a subtle look which totally suited her minimalist style. Meghan also never had a Maid of Honor, unlike Kate who had her sister Pippa as the Maid of Honor. Everyone was also impressed by the melanin at the Royal wedding; from the priest to the church choir.

All those things sure made the wedding quite spectacular and fun to watch and one thing for sure is that Kenyans can learn a thing or two from the Royal wedding:

1. Ladies, sometimes, less is more.

Khalif Kairo and his former business partner Clement Kinuthia are locked in a heated exchange of accusations, with Kairo now alleging that Clement not only cheated on his wife but also had an affair with his (Kairo’s) girlfriend. The car dealer also revealed that he is currently single, but will introduce a new lady once he resolves the issues surrounding his business.

While it’s totally okay to go for the whole face beat for the gods look when it comes to makeup, we learned from Meghan that sometimes, less is more! You can still look stunning in a no makeup look instead of layering your face with a million beauty products on your big day. After all, once the wedding is over, you’ll go back to your natural self no?

2. Brides can embrace simple elegance and still look outstanding on their wedding day.

Nearly every Kenyan bride goes for a mermaid sweetheart neckline wedding gown. And that’s fine really, it’s your big day and you’re free to wear whatever you wish. One thing we can learn from Meghan though is that simple elegance is GOLD! Her designer gown was quite simple but it was so gorgeous. I literally got goosebumps watching her walk down the aisle. She looked so beautiful without trying too hard. Sometimes, you should let your own beauty speak volumes for you instead of the bridal gown.

3. If you do not need the wedding gifts, donate them to the less fortunate.

Meghan and Harry chose to donate all their wedding gifts to charity organizations they selected themselves. Sometimes, by the time we are getting married, we have everything we need, so instead of adding more things we really don't require, donate the gifts to the less fortunate or ask for money from guests instead which, if you’re financially stable, you could use it to help those in need or put the money into a good cause. You just might end up impacting someone’s life for good.

4. Never forget your roots.

Family above everything. Many people were surprised to see so many black people at the Royal wedding. I loved how Meghan’s mother stood out in her melanin and dreadlocks. If you get married in a foreign land or to a foreigner, do not forget your roots. By all means, invite all those ushago shushus to sing and ululate heartily as they watch you get married. Ain’t no shame in that.

5. Your first marriage, doesn’t have to be your last marriage.

If Meghan had stayed in a marriage that wasn’t working, she wouldn’t have found her prince. If things are not working out, it’s okay to let go. There’s a saying that goes, 'when you’re strong enough to say goodbye, life will bless you with a new hello'. To all divorced men and women out there, there’s always a second chance at love! Do not give up, the world has 7 billion people and your prince charming is out there, it’s just a matter of time.

6. Age is not a defining factor.

Meghan is actually three years older than Harry. Yes, it’s okay to date and marry a guy younger than you. You might be locking yourself out of many potential dates simply cause you have put an age restriction on the guys you date. Break out from your comfort zone. Btw, I once dated a slightly older guy who was behaving like a child, that whole older guys are mature notion is bullshit sometimes. Age is just a number...or a word, if you please.

7. Marriage is all about compromise!

Meghan has to give up a lot to be with Harry. She has to give up her US citizenship, her blog, social media, acting career, dress code etc…when you get married to someone, you become one. You have to be willing to sacrifice some things to be with the love of your life. If you need to change cities or jobs to be with your love, by all means, do it. Otherwise, if you’re not willing to compromise, you’re better off marrying someone else to avoid problems and arguments in future.
