What you need to consider before getting a second wife

How to prepare to have multiples wives.

With the recent remarks of the Kiambu Women Rep, Gathoni Wamuchomba, encouraging rich men to get more wives, some men may start considering polygamy.

However, modern cultural trends have seen men favour the "traditional" route of a Christian marriage then a plethora of clandestine arrangements.

Infidelity aside, some men may start to invest in the merits of a legally and culturally sanctioned polygamous marriage.

Here are a few things to consider before going down that road.

1. Understand yourself

Are you the kind of man who can handle two women? Can you afford to support both wives, and any children that come from the unions?

2. Consider your wife's feelings on the matter

Marrying another woman without talking with your wife first would be like hiring a new recruit without letting HR, and your boss know. She has to agree to it. And if she doesn't find a way to compromise.

3. Get organised

If your wife consents to the arrangement you have to find a way to coexist. Will they live in separate locations? If so, ensure that you have enough forethought to cater to your wives' requirements that they have of you. Your second wife is also a priority not an afterthought.

4. Communicate

Don't play games with them. Don't manipulate them. Let there be openness and communcation.

5. Don't cheat

Having a second wife doesn't give you permission to sleep around. You still have to be faithful to your wives and there should be the courtesy of knowing where you are if you're with the other wife. Hence the organisation in point no. 3.

6. Ensure security

Make sure your wives and children are protected legally and that they can be secure in your relationship with them. At no point should the presence of the one wife feel like an ousting to the other wife. Figure out how to balance your relationships.
