Taita Taveta women representative Joyce Lay is probably one of the most gorgeous and stylish female politicians in Kenya.

Ms Lay explosively hit headlines in 2015, after she was sexually harassed by Turbo MP Elisha Busienei in Tokyo, where she was part of a Presidential entourage.

Behind her striking looks and a warm personality, Lay has a heartbreaking story which she has narrated time and time again.

At the age of 19 years, the Women Rep got pregnant and was scared as hell to break the news to her no-nonsense father, who was also an Administrative Police officer.

When she finally gained the courage to spill the beans, her father did not take the pregnancy kindly, something that made her almost commit suicide.

“Luckily, my little brother saw me and he knew what I was going to do. So, he quietly followed me and managed to stop me,” Lay said.

She gave birth to a son, who sadly died at the age of two years over what the doctors said was yellow fever.

The death of Lay's two-year-old was relayed to her by her mother who was taking care of the little one as she was in school making up for the lost time.

One year later, her father also passed away after suffering a stroke.

During a television interview, Lay stated that the death of her dad was a major blow as it came with the huge responsibility of taking care of the family.

On August, 25, 2007 Lay tied the knot with a white man, William Lay, but later divorced over what the court heard were ‘irreconcilable differences'.

Before the divorce, Lay went through a traumatic surgery where she had to remove her uterus due to health complications.

Luckily, she was able to have a son through a surrogate mother, but the Laws of Kenya made it hard for her to claim him as her own. The politician was forced to adopt the little boy, a legal process that took four years.

Lay, who recently ditched ODM for Jubilee Party, entered politics after pressure from the women she was working with in her County.

She has been involved in countless community projects to uplift the lives of women and the masses at large.

The born again politician believes in empowering women to be better people in the society.

Ahead of the August 8 poll, she has expressed interest in the Taita Taveta Senatorial seat.
