Laxatives can help you lose weight. It’s no lie, but at what cost?

Here is all you need to know about using laxative dieting as a weight loss method. There is the good, the bad and the ugly.

Efficient

Laxatives are substances that loosen stools and increase bowel movements. According to Dr. Oz Show there are 4 types of laxatives.

  1. Type one: The least powerful laxative is a fiber-based laxative that bulks up the stool and helps it pass naturally through the digestive system.
  2. Type two: The next laxative type that is a little stronger are the osmotic laxatives that work by drawing water into the intestine and helps the stool move through quicker.
  3. Type three: A stronger laxative type is the stool softeners that make the stool soft and is used for people who are constipated and having difficult bowel movements.
  4. Type four: The strongest laxative type is the stimulant laxatives that actually irritate the intestinal walls forcing the body to expel whatever is in the digestive tract.

How it works

Dr. Oz explains that stimulant laxatives actively irritate the bowels, which causes not only food and waste to pass through very quickly and forcefully, but also inhibits the absorption of nutrients. The suppressed nutrient absorption is why weight is lost so dramatically in people who go on a laxative diet.

The good

There’s not much beyond losing weight rapidly without the extra effort of having to work out or really watch what you are eating.

The bad

Here’s a tip: Every medication has a bad side. With using pills constantly every day, addiction is an imminent consequence.

Stella Nyawira, an insurance consultant, was an addict of laxatives. “I started taking one a day and then somehow I was taking 12 each day. Also, taking too much laxatives damages your intestines making them dependent on the pills. Stella says, “When I stopped my body went through withdrawals. I don’t advice anyone to use them. My body was hurting, I couldn’t just go to the bathroom without taking the pills. I was always getting bloated.”

The ugly

Your body cannot sustain itself on such a diet. Besides starving yourself, using laxatives might also be causing serious damage to your internal organs. These include:

  1. It affects the brain by causing electrolyte imbalance that can cause fatal seizures.
  2. It can also damage the colon lining destroying your natural way of excretion and limiting you to a colostomy bag for life.
  3. It can lead to bleeding of the kidneys and their long term damage.
  4. Abusing laxatives can also make your heart stop beating due to lack of nutrients.
