Governor Munya’s secret deal with Raila’s team revealed

Confusion has engulfed Meru over Raila's statement.

Confusion engulfed residents of Meru County after the recent campaign tour of Nasa leaders led by their presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

The leaders in a strange twist appeared to front Winnie Kaburu, a Wiper gubernatorial candidate and then later changed tune, and urged Meru voters to re-elect incumbent Peter Munya.

The endorsement sparked confusion in the vote-rich Upper Eastern region especially after the Nasa leaders were received warmly and drew large crowds as they visited Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties.

The move elicited sharp reactions from Munya’s opponents who accused him of being a Nasa sympathiser despite the governor who is the Party of National Unity (PNU) leader maintaining that he backs President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.

Munya’s fiercest rival and critic Senator Kiraitu Murungi said Raila’s endorsement of Munya proved that he was with the Opposition all along.

"Munya has a secret deal with NASA. He should not fool people that he is supporting Uhuru anymore," said Kiraitu.

Governor Munya was later forced to come out to defend himself against the accusations that he was a Nasa sympathiser.

Munya went on air during a radio show to re-affirm his support for President Kenyatta.

The President is scheduled to visit Meru County this weekend, a move that will further spice up politics in the area with elections only 48 days away.

This is not the first time Munya has been embroiled in controversy with the Opposition.

In March during a similar tour in the region, the Nasa leaders praised Munya hailing him as a true believer of devolution.

"Munya is a friend and we have a lot in common as far as devolution is concerned. He stands for what is truthful and just. We welcome him to NASA.

He has been frustrated in his efforts to fight for devolution. In this regard, we will work closely with Munya if we get to head the national government," NASA leader Raila Odinga told Meru residents.
