15-year-old pupil gives birth outside a private hospital in Mombasa as Doctors’ Strike continues to bite

According to the girl’s mother, they had earlier gone to the Coast General Provincial Hospital but were turned away because there were no doctors.

An expectant woman the Coast General Hospital on September 6, 2014. A 15-year-old pupil gave birth outside a private hospital in Mombasa on Wednesday soon after being turned away at the public hospitals due to the ongoing doctors’ strike.

According to a local daily, the girl’s mother had taken her to the Port Reitz sub-county hospital but the nurses referred them to a private hospital in Changamwe as they could not handle her situation because her pregnancy was immature.

“They referred me to a private hospital in Changamwe, but I was asked to pay Sh6,000 deposit before my daughter could be assisted. I left because I could not afford,” said the mother.

“I used a boda boda to transport my daughter from five hospitals within the county but I never got help. I was told by a guard at the Coast Hospital to seek medical services at Al Farooq Hospital - a private facility,” she added.

Premature birth

The girl delivered just when they had reached Al Farooq Hospital.

She was later helped by the doctors and the baby rushed to an incubator.

The hospital’s chief executive officer Adan Mahmud said the baby was delivered prematurely at eight months.

A woman gave birth outside a Kilifi Town private hospital on Tuesday after she was denied entry into the facility for lacking money to pay for delivery charges.

Zawadi Kenga Wanje from Matano mane in Ganze Sub County gave birth outside Wananchi medical clinic at Kwa Charo wa Mae area in the morning after efforts to get assistance from the facility medics failed.

Women passing by were forced to render a helping hand to the woman who successfully delivered a healthy baby girl in the open.

Eye witnesses who also assisted the woman described the hospital’s management failure to receive the woman inhuman considering they were aware doctors in public hospitals were on strike.
