Speaker Justin Muturi lands new job

National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, has been elected President of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC).

The voting which was held in Accra, Ghana took place in his absence.

According to The Star his acceptance speech read by Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir, Muturi said he will work on three key issues to ensure a corruption-free Africa during his tenure.

Speaker Muturi's pledges

Muturi also seeks to improve the detection, exposure and prevention of corruption across the continent by fostering strong parliamentary oversight on corruption.

"A graft-free Africa will play a great role in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals," the speaker asserted.

Muturi is also looking to creating networking with the Member of CPA, African Union, Pan African Parliament, Inter-parliamentary Union and his fellow Speakers in African Parliaments to strengthen APNAC as a caucus; and strengthening the APNAC Secretariat by lobbying for allocation of adequate funds by Parliaments for the support of programmes.

The Speaker also assured to work towards availability of adequate funds to undertake APNAC activities.

Origin of APNAC

APNAC started at the Regional Seminar on Parliament and Good Governance held in Kampala, Uganda, in early February 1999.

The Kenyan chapter was started in February 2001 by former Webuye MP Musikari Kombo.
