Trouble for DP Ruto’s spokesperson after threatening Nation Journalist

Ruto's spokesperson in hot soup

David Mugonyi is said to have called Daily Nation reporter Justus Wanga after publishing an article alleging there was a conflict between DP Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta over the Cabinet Secretary selection made on Friday.

In the recording, the voice believed to be Mugonyi’s is heard warning Mr. Wanga that he could lose his job over the story.

“I want to be outright with you. Ukitaka kufutwa kazi, continue with that path, utafutwa, utafutwa, sikudanganyi, utafutwa (If you want to be fired, continue on that path, you will be fired, you will be fired, I assure you you will be fired),” the DP’s spokesperson is heard warning the journalist.

Following the audio clip, the Kenya Union of Journalist (KUJ) Secretary General Erick Oduor issued a statement cautioning Mr. Mugonyi against threatening journalists.

Oduor sharply criticized the DP’s spokesperson noting that action must be taken against him.

Media freedom

The KUJ secretary General emphasized that journalists in Kenya will continue working freely and tell stories despite who it displeases.

“We must defend good journalism and tell Mr. Mugonyi and his agents that journalists are not politicians and shall do their job for public good. If he thrives in his work by issuing threats to journalists to please his employer, it is high time to quit his job because stories that meet the standards set by newsrooms will be told whether he likes it or not,” the statement read in part.

Other journalists also condemned Mugonyi with many stating that it was shameless of him to threaten a fellow colleague.

Journalists reactions

“Shame on you David Mugonyi!” NTV news anchor Ken Mijungu stated.

"Ironically, David Mugonyi (Extreme Left, penning down notes) worked for Nation Media Group. He knows the trade. He knows about sources. Did anyone threaten him with sacking during his time as a scribe for any of the stories that he wrote while at NMG?” Saddique Shaban said

"I have always respected Mr. David Mugonyi .So disappointed by how he handled the DP William Ruto situation. Threatening any journalist issa no,” Leon Lidigu commented.
