Embu Level Five hospital makes history with first ever brain surgery

The surgery was witnessed by Embu Governor Martin Wambora.

The surgery was performed to remove a blood clot in the brain of a 52 year old man after he was struck in the head by a hoe.

According to lead surgeon Dr. Henry Mugendi, the surgery was successful and the patient is currently recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit within the hospital.

“Everything went well, we had four doctors and six assitants in for the surgery and we are happy with the process and expect the patient to make a full recovery,” he was quoted by Citizen TV.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora, commended the milestone achieved, promising to provide more funds in the health department to help facilitate better health care in the region.

“The county will spend a third of this year’s budget, about Ksh, 2 billion on improving health care and hiring specialists to man the facility,” he said.

The hospital’s chief executive Dr. Moses Njue revealed that patients who are covered by NHIF will be charged Ksh. 100,000 for a brain surgery.

Wambora along with other medics toured the hospital as it prepared to carry out the first ever Kidney transplant on a 16 year old student.

“The facility will now reduce referral cases of patients to hospitals abroad and this is in line with the government’s aim to achieve universal health care.”

The hospital which also doubles up as a teaching hospital is set to hire more medics and specialists to help carry out kidney transplants, cancer and orthopedic treatments.
