Roselyn Akombe gets rare job promotion

Akombe gets senior position at UN political affairs department

Divulging the information, Communication Director at the UN Headquarters Salim Lone stated that Akombe was promoted to a senior position in UN Department of Political Affairs despite opposition from the Kenyan Mission.

She will now be the Director-level Chief of Policy Planning and Guidance. According to Lone, who is also the former spokesman of NASA leader Raila Odinga, Akombe’s promotion comes with lucrative benefits and also additional protection.

Violent opposition

“Despite "almost violent opposition" from the Kenya Mission (as UN insider put it), Roselyn Akombe just got a promotion to an even more senior position in UN Dept of Political Affairs. UN promotions are rare. This recognition by UN will give Roselyn some additional protection too,” he tweeted.

Last year, Akombe hit headlines after unceremoniously resigning as a commissioner at the electoral body only eight days to the fresh presidential poll slated for October 26, 2017.

She fled the country and issued her resignation from the US claiming that her life was in danger.

Divided commission

The former IEBC Commissioner revealed that the Commission was unable to conduct the fresh poll adding that it was also highly divided.

"It has become increasingly difficult to appear on television to defend positions I disagree with in the name of collective responsibility. I have concluded that I am no longer making any significant contribution to the Commission and to my country as a Commissioner.

"Not when the staff is getting last minute instructions on changes in technology and electoral transmission of results. Not when in parts of the country, the training of presiding officers is being rushed for fear of attacks by presiding officers," she said.
