Matiang'i takes action against Police Boss over woman-slapping incident

The woman was assaulted as police officers watched.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has taken action against the Mathira West OCPD Kiptoo Birgen after a man was filmed slapping a woman at a police station.

Matiang'i interdicted Birgen for failing to take action against Mr James Wanjohi who slapped election observer Ms Martha Miano.

Miano was assaulted at the Kiamariga station, following a confrontation between Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and election officials during the by-election in Ruguru ward, Nyeri county.

A clip showing Miano slapped by Wanjohi caused uproar among Kenyans for the failure by the police to apprehend the man after the assault.

Mathira West OCPD Kiptoo Birgen later said Wanjohi was taken to Kiamariga Police Station where he was briefly detained and later released on a Sh10,000 cash bail.

An angry Matiangi said Birgen will be disciplined for failing to take action against Wanjohi saying he had lied to his bosses that he would be charged in court.

Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet has also ordered “full inquiry into the assault” at Kiamariga Police Station.
