4 students to be charged over Moi Girls School fire

Police have zeroed in on four students who will be arraigned in court.

Four students are expected to be arraigned in court over the Moi Girls High School fire.

The four are to face prosecution either on Wednesday or Thursday over the fire that killed nine students in last Saturday’s fire.

According to the Nation, the students had been taken to the scene of the fire in the dormitory as detectives reconstructed the events of the fateful day.

“We started by grilling more than 15 of them, then nine, then five, and now we have four. We have made a lot of progress and these girls will be arraigned before the end of the week,”a source privy to the investigations disclosed.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Monday revealed that the fire was not an accident but an arson attack.

“I can tell you unequivocally that I have been briefed by the police that it was not an accident. All investigations have ruled out the fact that that was not an accident, it was a case of arson and a number of interrogations have happened,” he said.

The death toll on Monday rose to nine after Mary Njengo Mokaya, succumbed to injuries on after two days at the Kenyatta National Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where she was admitted with two other girls.

Njengo sustained 66 per cent burns as she bravely guided her colleagues out of the dormitory which was engulfed in flames.

Parents of the nine students who perished on Tuesday went to the Chiromo mortuary for DNA sampling to identify the bodies.

Chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor and Government Chemist Joseph Kimani who conducted the procedure revealed that it will take between three weeks and one month to complete the process.
