Mutahi Ngunyi's strong advice to Wanjigi after false obituary notice

Jimi Wanjigi was reported 'dead' by Daily Nation on Wednesday.

The ‘tyranny of numbers’ memoir told the businessman not to spare the , as it failed to do the basic ‘duty to care’ before the publication of the purported obituary.

“On the Jimi Wanjigi obituary the Daily Nation has no excuse. He should sue them for failing to exercise "duty of care",” he tweeted on Thursday even after Nation Media Group issued a statement to apologise to the business mogul.

He equally sent a warning to the businessman’s foes, telling them to behove the family in the matter.

“To Wanjigi’s enemies, keep his woman, and children out of our wars as men. I defend him as my age-mate,” he said.

On Wednesday evening, the Nation Media Group published a photo of the man who allegedly placed the cheeky death announcement of Mr Jimmy Wanjigi on the Daily Nation of February 7, 2018.

The CCTV which the Nairobi-based media house shared, the middle aged man was at Nation Centre to pay for the obituary of Mr. Wanjigi at around 5 pm on Tuesday, February 6.

“The suspect is believed to be in his mid-thirties, of brown complexion, plump, about 5 foot 10, with a full beard and short hair,” the Nation described him in a statement aired in the NTV’s 7pm and 9pm bulletins .

A screen grab of the surveillance footage, shows he walked out of the ad-centre at 5.05 pm.

NMG has since issued a statement apologising for the erroneous publication and reported the matter at Central Police Station for further investigations.

“We refer to the publication of a death and funeral announcement of James Richard Wanjagi bearing the picture of Mr. Jimi Wanjigi that was erroneously published in the Daily Nation of February 7, 2018,” said NMG in an official statement.

It added: “We regret the pain and anguish this may have caused Mr. Wanjigi and his family and sincerely apologise for this.”

Ill-motive

Mr Wanjigi, on Thursday, however, faulted his political foes, whom he accused of maligning his name due to his shift on political support to National Super Alliance.

Wanjigi who spoke at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters in Kiambu after he appeared to honour the summon by the police.

“I don’t think it was just an advert… NMG yesterday issued a death promise. I don’t take it lightly and I must say what they did was horrific. It didn’t hurt me as much as it hurt my family. My children schooling abroad were being called from all over being told ‘it looks like your father is dead’… This was their wake up call,” said Wanjigi.

He narrated of a horrific and emotional torture his children had to go through after waking up to the news of ‘his death’.

“Kenya right now is going through a twilight zone. But dawn is coming and its not far away. All these things being circulated everywhere, the injustice being perpetuated by a regime supposed to adhere to the law will come to an end. I am not worried about myself, God is the one who gives and takes life,” he said.

In a rare and emotional press appearance, Wanjigi stated that the incident had caused a lot of trauma to his children whom he claimed were woken up with news of their father's death.

"I must say, it was horrific what they did. It didn't hurt me as much as it did my family. I have children who go to school abroad and they were awakened by calls from all over being told that it looks like you father is dead," he stated.

The wealthy businessman stated that the obituary was a direct threat to his life, adding that it was not mistakenly placed on the country's largest newspaper.

Wanjigi was categorical that he did not trust the state to carry out credible investigations on the matters, challenging that more than 300 Kenyans have been killed by the police and no investigations were undertaken.
