Deceased Nyeri governor's family to get 36 million

Governor Gakuru was involved in an accident at Kabati, along Thika-Muranga road after his vehicle veered off the road and hit a guard rail.

Nyeri county government has set aside 36 million as compensation to the family of the late Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru.

Through a report by Nyeri county Budget and Appropriations Committee, it was proposed that 10 million to be allocated to cover the funeral expenses while 20 million to be set aside for insurance premiums.

The report will have to be debated on in the county assembly first and if passed, it will change the county supplementary budget to cater for the compensation.

The late governor was buried at his Kirichu home in Nyeri on 17 November 2017. The state funeral was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.

Governor Gakuru was involved in an accident at Kabati, along Thika-Muranga road after his vehicle veered off the road and hit a guard rail. He died while receiving treatment at Thika level 5 hospital.

His driver was arrested and charged with careless driving a week after narrating to the media that he deliberately hit the guard rail in an attempt to avoid being hit by a lorry. However, the vehicle punctured through the guard rail and injured the occupants including the Nyeri governor.

However, Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko stopped the driver's prosecution.
