Top politicians with controversial degrees

1. Bishop Margret Wanjiru

She was first known as the fierce preacher of the Jesus Is Alive Ministries which commanded a populous following. She warmed her way to people’s hearts through sermons until 2007 when she got another calling; politics. She vied and won the 2007 Starehe parliamentary seat beating the seasoned politician Maina Kamanda.

In 2013 she decided to vie for the top county job, governorship. It is then that her academic paper woes began. She stated in her nomination paper that she had a degree in Christian Leadership from United Graduate College and Seminary International. She also cited that she had a Doctor of Theology degree from Vineyard Harvester Bible College. However, the Commission for Higher Education questioned the institutions she received her degrees from. The body claimed that the institutions were not recognized by United States department of education. The scandal cost her the nomination.

2.  Ferdinand Waititu

The current Kiambu governor’s alleged academic forgery case is perhaps the longest and most publicized. His troubles began when he showed interest in Kiambu governorship. The then incumbent governor, William kabogo, had plans to cut Waititu’s race short. Kabogo filed a petition in court challenging Waititu’s academic qualification. He claimed that Waititu was using academic papers which had the name, Clifford Ndungu Waititu which conflicted with the official name, Ferdinand, on his birth certificate.

Kabogo also claimed Waititu did not study at Punjab University. In his defense, Waititu argued that Clifford Ndungu and Ferdinant Waititu referred to the same individual. Waititu won the day after High Court dismissed the case citing that the court did not have jurisdiction to determine the case.

3. Hassan Ali Joho

The Mombasa county head was under heat earlier this year after Kenya National Examination Council wrote to Director of Criminal Investigation inform him that Joho had presented forged KCSE result slip. KNEC wrote that Joho did not sit for the 1992 KCSE examination at Serani Secondary School as indicated  in his certificate.

The Council further wrote that Joho sat for his national examination a year earlier and had scored a D-. As such, Joho’s degree came under scrutiny. Joho claimed he studied commerce in the University of Nairobi and then transferred credit to Kampala International University.

The case was finally dismissed after the court cited that the government was on a witch hunt after Joho’s public spat with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

4. Johnson Sakaja

The current Nairobi Senator became the talk of town after transcripts alleged to be his were circulated online. The transcripts showed that he did not complete his final year at the university of Nairobi.

The controversial transcript showed that Sakaja was set to retake some units before graduationg. Sakaja denied that the transcripts were his. He said he would not have vied if he did not have a clean academic history.

5. Mithika Linturi

This Meru Senator would have graduated this year with a law degree were it not for the University of Nairobi senate finding error in documents the senator used to apply for the law degree.

Linturi successfully applied to study law using a forged bachelors of commerce papers. The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission had previously tried to have him blocked from vying for the senatorial seat. The commission’s efforts were quashed after a court stopped it temporarily from taking any action against him.
