Why sex workers could be banned from Nairobi

Nairobi MCAs have raised concerns on the increase of sex work within the city.

A recent motion presented by some Nairobi MCAs, has raised concerns on the increase of sex workers in Nairobi which, if passed, could see the end of commercial sex work within the city.

According to Woodley Kenyatta Golf course MCA Abraham Njihia, commercial sex work has become prevalent in various sub-counties within Nairobi such as Hurlingham and Adams Arcade where popular brothels are being masked behind ‘massage palors’.

Njihia went on to call for the punishment of offenders of the Constitution’s Chapter 63 section 153 and 154 of the Penal Code which ‘prohibits men and women from living wholly or partly on earnings or from soliciting money through commercial sex work’.

Njihia’s sentiments were seconded by ODM nominated MCA Mellab Atema who recounted her experience of having street boys beg her for money in order to receive services from sex workers.

A lack of age restrictions and control of digitized content was also highlighted as key determinants for prostitution as mentioned by Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obura.

"Everything is digitized, parents who are at work are not aware of what their children back at home are accessing from the internet. As a parent it is my responsibility to enlighten my children on what is right and what is wrong. Morally upbringing is very important," he was quoted by The Star.

A debate of whether to pass the law or not is set to take place on Tuesday December 5.
