Why TSC won't hire teachers trained in these subjects

The affected candidates are holders of Diplomas and Degrees.

Mrs Nancy Macharia, TSC Chief Executive Officer said such individuals would not be considered even if they have post-graduate diploma in education certificates.

“Candidates whose training is in subjects that are not in the curriculum do not qualify,” Mrs Macharia said.

Applicants to be left out include those with bachelor degrees in natural resources, meteorology, forestry, animal husbandry, horticulture, farm machinery, fisheries, theology, journalism, among others.

To teach in a technical vocation education training institution, one must have attained a minimum of a higher diploma in a relevant course.

“Applicants with a mean grade of C- and grade C- in subjects taught in secondary school and have progressed through certificate, diploma to higher diploma/degree qualify for employment in such institutions,” Mrs Macharia said in a circular to education institutions.

Two teaching subjects

Those interested in teaching at secondary school must have a minimum mean grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination or its equivalent.

They must also have a bachelor of education degree with two teaching subjects, a bachelor of science or arts degree plus a PGDE with two teaching subjects or a bachelor of science with education and Bachelor of Arts with education with two teaching subjects.

Mrs Macharia said applicants must have studied the two teaching subjects at KCSE level, except for agriculture, business studies, home science, and computer.

“For business studies and computer, one should have attained a minimum of C+ in mathematics in the KCSE examination,” she said.
